Chapter Six

It was late when they returned to the inn. The lights were on in the foyer, but Cassy’s car was gone.

“It looks as if Cassy isn’t back yet,” Sarah noted, glancing away from Kurt to their grandchild in the backseat. Having missed her afternoon nap, Mandy had curled up on the seat.

“I’ll get her.” Kurt’s heart swelled with love as he gazed down at Mandy, then lifted her and carried her inside. Surprising Sarah, he waited while she got Mandy ready for bed. He kissed the sleepy little angel, who couldn’t keep her eyes open once her grandmother had her tucked in.

Sarah was a bit unnerved when she followed Kurt into the sitting room. He made had no effort to leave, instead walking over to the patio doors and gazing thoughtfully out into the garden.

“Can I get you some coffee? Cake?”

“Cake?”

Sarah shrugged. “Cassy is the chef in the family. She is always trying out some new recipe on us.”

“Nothing for me. We need to talk.”

She laughed in disbelief. “We’ve done nothing but talk all afternoon.” She sat down, crossing her legs at the knee. Sarah was tired. In spite of having stayed up talking with him on Friday night, she hadn’t been able to sleep the following night. Kurt was the reason. Sarah couldn’t get him out of her mind. She found herself reliving that magical time when they had first fallen in love.

“Have we? I don’t agree.” He paused, turning so he could gaze into her eyes. “We’ve been apart a lot of years, Sarah. We made a baby together. We share that precious child in there.” He gestured toward Mandy’s room. “I’d like to get to know my grandchild. I want her to know me. In order for that to happen, we need to spend some time together.”

Sarah knew she should have seen it coming. She had been so caught up trying to label her own confusing emotions that she had completely overlooked this possibility.

“Well?”

“What do you have in mind?” she murmured cautiously.

“I’d like to take her to the ranch. Let her see where I live, how I live.” Kurt waited so long for her response that he was sure it would be negative. He hardened himself, prepared to fight for what he wanted if necessary.

“Okay. Mandy is yours as much as she is mine. I’ve accepted that. But I don’t want you telling her that you’re her grandfather. It’s too soon. Besides, I would like to be present when she learns the truth. We’ll tell her that you’re an old family friend.”

“Thank you.” His voice was husky with emotion.

“It’s getting late,” Sarah hinted, wanting him to leave. She was so unsettled around him, so unsure of herself. No, the truth was she was unsure of how she felt about him. Up until a few days ago, she had known how she felt. She had hated his guts. Suddenly, all that had changed.

Kurt ignored the suggestion. He had more to say, much more. “There is something else I need to know.
